Carbon Accoya
AccoyaAccoya is highly durable and exceptionally dimensionally stable. The acetylation process greatly reduces moisture absorption, swelling, and shrinkage, making it one of the most stable timber options for exterior applications.
- Expected Lifespan – 50+ years with proper installation, ventilation and maintenance. Accoya itself states a design service life of up to 60 years for correctly installed and maintained cladding,
- Annual Inspection – Check yearly for colour fading, surface dryness, coating wear, fine cracks and mechanical damage. Movement, warping, and splitting are typically minimal.
- Gentle Cleaning – Use low-pressure water and a soft brush. Never pressure wash or use aggressive cleaners, as they may damage the brushed surface and protective finish.
- Cut Ends – Oil all freshly cut ends, notches, and drill holes during installation to maintain an even finish and protect exposed surfaces.
- Re-Oiling – South & West: approx. every 8–10 years. North & East: approx. every 10–12 years, depending on UV exposure and surface condition.
- Application – Clean thoroughly and allow to dry for 24–48 h. Apply one thin, even coat of matching pigmented maintenance oil along the grain, in the shade. Remove excess oil and keep dry for at least 24 h.
- Surface Protection – Accoya is extremely stable, but the charred and brushed surface can still be affected by impact or abrasion. Touch up damaged areas with maintenance oil where required.
- Fixings – Use high-quality A2 or A4 stainless-steel screws to prevent corrosion and staining. Avoid unsuitable metals in direct contact with the timber.
- Exceptional Stability – Accoya’s modified structure absorbs significantly less moisture, so boards swell, shrink, cup, and twist far less than conventional timber. Even on demanding facades, gaps and alignment remain more consistent over time.
- 50+ Year Durability – Accoya is engineered for exceptional resistance to rot and biological decay, with a 50-year above-ground warranty available from the manufacturer. Charring and oiling add a distinctive finished surface, while the wood itself provides the durability.
- Excellent Colour Retention – Its exceptional dimensional stability provides a stable base for the oiled finish, helping the coating perform consistently. The charred surface and pigmented oil retain their appearance well, while periodic re-oiling refreshes colour as UV exposure gradually affects the facade.
- Clean, Consistent Texture – Charring and brushing create a refined, controlled grain with relatively few visual defects. The result is a more uniform architectural appearance than naturally knot-heavy softwoods.
- Minimal Movement, Minimal Compromise – Accoya combines low movement, no problematic resin bleeding, and exceptional decay resistance. It costs considerably more than conventional softwoods, but is an excellent choice when maximum stability and long service life matter more than initial price.
